I've been working on the spring display on top of the book shelf by our door for a few days now. It still needs a few finishing touches but I wanted to show off what I have so far:
The two things I'm missing are a living moss ball (it's going to go on top of that tall bowl of white gravel on the right) and grass growing out of the egg shell on the left (it's still sprouting).
Let me break down the different parts for you...
Part 1: Hyacinths
I love how you can see the roots through the glass. I de-potted them and threw them in the glass holders and added some white rocks on top to help weight them down. Like my little pedestal holder? I made it for $2. I'm sharing the tutorial tomorrow.
Part 2: Ranunculus
I potted them in my Pampered Chef trifle bowl with some burlap. I cut a square of burlap big enough to fit, pulled out some threads, placed some saran wrap on top (to keep dirt to getting my burlap all grungy when I water it) pushed it down into the trifle bowl like so:
Add some dirt and a potted ranunculus from the nursery and BAM
(I love that this one is awesome and multi colored)
Part 3: Bird Nest
Don't worry: It's fake. I didn't steal anyone's home. This is just another dollar store bowl with a couple different kinds of moss pressed into the bottom and two rinsed out chicken eggs.
Part 4: Grassy Bits
Right now, I have some rye grass growing in a tea cup. I'm also sprouting some in another rinsed out chicken egg that I'll put on the candle stand (far left in the first picture). This was part of my experiment for growing my own easter grass. I put some dirt in a tea cup and sprinkled "rye berries" on top, watered it and put it under my grow light. If you have sunny windows (I don't), that would work just as well. See how crazy tall the grass is? That's what it looks like 7 days after planting it. That is a TON of grass. So if you were worried about having enough time to grow grass for easter, don't fret. This stuff hops up super quick.
Part 5: Living Moss Ball (in progress)
I've had plans to make a living moss ball that looks a lot like these awesome dollar store moss balls from Make the Best of Things:
She has an awesome tutorial on her blog for how she made them from dollar store materials.
My plan involves Floral foam, greening pins and the moss that grew in my flower basket over the winter:
It's not much to look at now, but hopefully I'll have a tutorial to share that actually works (as opposed to one that ends up on CraftFail.com). So check back this week (or better yet, scroll up to the top of the column on the left and sign up to get my new posts conveniently delivered to your inbox).
This week I'm sharing at The CSI Project (come check it out and play along, too!)
