Butterfly Wall Hanging

As most of you know, I am slowly working on decorating my daughter's bedroom with a fairy and butterfly theme. So here I am to show you yet another project for said room! I am so happy with how this turned out. Plus, it's SO easy to make and LESS than $5!! Can't get better than that, right? :)

 

So here's how to make your own butterfly wall hanging:

First, I stole my husband's Leatherman and went outside and cut a small branch off a tree. I wanted to make 2 of these, so the branch I found was about 24 inches long. You can cut it to as long or as short as you'd like. Try to find as straight of a branch as you can. (As you can see, the second stick isn't that straight)

Then I measured and cut the branch in half so I could make 2 of the wall hangings.

Next, I had some extra cord I bought to display my Fairy Stitchery & Rag Letter projects and tied it around both sides of each stick to create the hanger.

I cut some butterflies with the Silhouette, using a lighter & darker pink cardstock and some leftover vellum from my Night Light project. You could easily cut the butterfly shape out with scissors or use a butterfly-shaped punch if you don't have a cutter.

Put a cardstock butterfly and a vellum butterfly together, with the vellum on top. I then got a needle and some sewing thread (you could also use embroidery thread or even fishing line) because it was thin and most likely wouldn't be able to see it - plus I already had it so I didn't have to spend any money :) Poke two holes close to the bottom and the top of the butterfly's body. So much easier to thread that way.

(FYI, the holes in the above picture are a little too close, do it more like in the photo below)

Thread the needle through the butterfly, coming up through the back at the bottom and back down through the top hole. The thread was a little too thin to just tie a knot and leave it, so I tied the thread together on the back and them taped it to keep it there.

Keep tying your butterflies, spacing however you want - you can keep them all equal distances or make it random and uneven. Either way looks so cute! It's best to start tying with the bottom butterfly, and work your way up. Once you're done threading butterflies, take the extra thread at the top and tie that onto the stick and double or triple knot it to make sure it holds.

And that's IT!! Hang them up and admire your work!

I used two sheets of cardstock and 2 sheets of vinyl - total cost was  around $2, but you could get it for even less if scrapbook paper is on sale! The cord was fairly inexpensive, too, just bought it on the roll and used it for other projects. So this entire project cost me $5 at most!! Score! :)
