My dad and step-mom live on a small farm. While there are plenty of wild animals they like to keep away, birds are welcomed with open arms. There are all manner of bird feeders and bird baths in different places on their property. And of course every tree has at least one birdhouse.
Birdhouses are inexpensive at the crafts store (usually $5 - $10) and my son loves painting them. They are the perfect outlet for kids as young as 18 months to express their creativity. We let my son pick the colors and let him use paint brushes to keep working on his masterpiece until he felt it was finished.
Supplies
- Wood birdhouse
- Craft paint
- Paint brushes
- Clear waterproof sealer or Mod Podge Outdoor
Directions
Step 1: Protect your surface
Kids love painting. Not just the birdhouses, but themselves and maybe even the table. Cover everything with newspaper or a tablecloth or put them in an easy-to-wipe-down high chair. Put them in clothes that can get messy or strip them down to their diaper or undies.
Step 2: Paint!
Let them have fun picking the colors and paint instuments. Offer a variety of paintbrush options like foam brushes, big brushes, little brushes and their hands
Step 3: Seal
Allow the birdhouse to dry completely before sealing with Mod Podge Outdoor
or another non-toxic sealer.

We like to write the occasion the birdhouse was given for. Usually something like "To Grandpa from K. Father's Day 2013"
