Healthy Eating: Food Rules: A Simplified Guide to Eating

Food Rules by Michael Pollan

I have come to believe that the worst thing that ever happened to food is science. When we started manipulating nutritional content of breads and cereal... adding preservatives and artificial colorings and flavorings,... fortify and basically creating as Michael Pollan calls it “edible foodlike substances” an ironic thing occurred, Pollan calls it"
The American Paradox” “The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we seem to become.”
As a Simple Living person I believe in simple food, REAL FOOD in it’s natural state. Pollan has a simple guide to eating well.
“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”
If you follow this simple adage you will be healthier.
So, how do you know what is “real” food? Well, Michael Pollan’s book Food Rules spells it out very succinctly and comically. I read this book with my children and they laughed out loud.

The outrageousness of some of his statements made them stick in my kids' minds. Like for instance, my son loves Nutella, so my daughter always reminds him of the rule:

“It’s not food if it’s called the same name in every language.”
My daughter who was in 3rd grade at the time we read the book loved the rule:

Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce.

Some of our favorite rules are:

Eat only foods that will eventually rot.

Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.

And our all time favorite:

THE WHITER THE BREAD, THE SOONER YOU'LL BE DEAD.

Get a copy of this terrific guide and share it with your family during dinner. You will be educated and entertained...Bon Appetite!
