DIY Monogram Sign

DIY Monogram Sign

I love when I find an opportunity to create wall art that is unique and says something about our family. With a little help from Poppy Seed Projects and DecoArt, I put together this monogram sign that looks great on my gallery wall in my living room. This would also be cute with a child's initial or fun to make as a wedding or Christmas gift.

DIY Monogram Sign Supplies

Supplies:
10" Wooden Letter (Poppy Seed Projects)
16" Square MDF Plaque (Poppy Seed Projects)
Texturizing Cream (Poppy Seed Projects)
Americana Acrylic Paints
Sponge Brushes
Frog Tape
Sandpaper
E6000 Glue

Poppyseed Projects Texture Cream Technique

Apply the Texture Cream to the MDF board with a sponge brush or cloth. I applied it in a circular pattern all over the board. Before using the Texture Cream, I highly recommend watching Poppy Seed Projects video tutorial to get a better idea of how the technique works.

Let dry completely. You will know it's dry when it's all clear and no longer tacky.

Paint the wooden letter with a few coats of Americana Mustard Seed acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely between coats. You won't need to paint the backside of the letter.

Paint a couple of coats of Americana Slate Grey on the MDF board. Let dry completely, then paint a few coats of Americana Snow (Titanium) White and let dry. They first grey layer will show through the white when you sand the board, so if you want a different shade or color, just use a different paint on the first layer.

Use 1 1/2" wide Frog Tape to create stripes. Paint a few coats of Slate Grey paint, making sure to paint away from the edges of the tape instead of towards it to help prevent any of the paint from bleeding through. Let dry between coats, then remove the tape.

With sandpaper, start sanding the MDF board. You won't need to apply too much pressure or work too hard. The colors beneath the layers of paint and the circular texture will start to show through, It's really up to you how much you want to "antique" the board. If you sand too much, the actual board could show through, so keep an eye on it. It's easier to remove the paint than to add more to fix it (though it is doable).

Place the wooden letter in the center of the board. If needed, measure each side around the letter to make sure it's centered. Lightly mark around parts of the letter with a pencil so you know where to put the letter after it's glued. Add some E6000 Glue around the back of the letter and place it on the board. Lightly press it, and lay flat to dry for at least a few hours. Waiting overnight or even a day or so before hanging it up is best to make sure the letter is completely attached to the board.
