When Thanksgiving rolls around, you will discover (if you haven't yet!) that there are two kinds of cranberry sauce people: Rustic Sauce People and Jellied Sauce People. My sister has a decidedly firm preference for jellied (read: canned) cranberry sauce.
The problem with that? Most metal food cans contain BPA - a known endocrine disruptor. And most canned cranberry sauce contains GMO corn syrup. Ew.
This year I discovered that Pacific Foods - a local company makes an organic jellied cranberry sauce that comes in a package called a Tetra Pak. Tetra Paks are BPA free and don't require additional preservatives to be added to the food to store them that way. And the sauce is tasty enough that my sister and I may even be able to settle our annual Thanksgiving cranberry sauce feud!
Now that there is a guilt free option, you can take advantage of the ease of jellied cranberry sauce but still dress it up to look nice, too. Here's an easy way to pretty up jellied cranberry sauce
Supplies
- Serving plate
- Pacific Foods Organic Jellied Cranberry Sauce
- Rosemary sprigs
- Orange slices, cut into small wedges
- Fresh cranberries
Directions
Step 1: Open the Tetra Pak
Open the Tetra Pak by folding the flaps up and cutting across the top with scissors. Cut down the side as well to open it up (this is course isn't necessary for things like soup or gravy, but in this case we want to preserve the shape!). Drain off any extra juice and blot with a paper towel if needed.
Step 2: Transfer
Use a spatula to transfer the cranberry sauce to the platter.
Step 3: Arrange
Use a sharp knife to cut a few 1/4" slices of the jelly. Collapse them forward.
Step 4: Garnish
Use the rosemary, cranberries and orange slices to garnish the cranberry sauce as pictured.
I'm so glad to learn about the organic and BPA free foods available from Pacific Foods - including Thanksgiving pantry staples like broth, gravy, pumpkin puree, cranberry sauce and more. All of Pacific Foods' products are also certified GMO free from the Non-GMO Project which means I can feel good about serving these pre-packaged foods to my family when I don't have time to make them from scratch myself.
We swore off metal canned foods a couple years ago and I'm happy for this way healthier option for my pantry. Check out this info graphic to see how Tetra Pak'd foods are different than metal cans:
